Bilbao, 21:52.
We’re on our way home. We stopped at Logrono this afternoon a little after mid-day having walked 24km, most of which was on tarmac or concrete. It’s amazing how hard it is to walk these sort of distances on concrete. Concrete is hard, relentlessly hard, remorselessly flat and after a while very painful on the foot, mostly the heel but pretty much the entire foot gets to appreciate the sheer awfulness of concrete underfoot. We’d been warned on the forums that much of the Camino took place on streets, pavements and roads but the Spanish have clearly seen 250,000 pilgrims stomping their way through Spain every year as an economic opportunity not to be missed and have replaced perfectly good earth paths with pre-imprinted concrete pavements much to the detriment of the pilgrim.
This has led many peregrinos to spend the early dawn bandaging up blistered feet and swollen ankles in preparation for the rigours of the day ahead.
Add to this a growing sense of responsibilities being shirked, dogs about to undergo major testicular surgery and we decided to head for home, but to return regularly to continue the Camino until we arrive at St. James’ tomb sometime during Easter 2019.
That is always assuming that Dorothy doesn’t repeat last night’s feat of locking herself in the toilet for 20 minutes, her cries of “HELP, HELP” going unheard and unheeded. What a Muppet 😉.
The flight leaves at 10:25 tomorrow morning.
We shall return.
Buen Camino
We’re all looking forward to seeing you if that’s any consolation. Love you both dearly
