Vereda da Ponte de São Lourenço

The car duly arrived at 9 am and after a brief filling in off forms, I took the wheel and headed off on the wrong side of the road sitting on the wrong side of the car. How does the human brain cope with such changes. In my case, with aplomb 😊.

It’s an interesting experience hurling oneself through traffic, around hairpin bends and all the while managing not to actually hit anything. Much like Arthur Dent learning to fly, it’s all about avoiding the ground and in my case remaining in that space between the wall and the oncoming cars.

And so we arrived at the car park from which we’d walk to the most easterly point on the island.

I warn you now, the images are stunning but for those of you with with vertigo I suggest you look away now.

Starting out
Extraordinary colours
Why here?
Water sculpted
One for the scrapbook
This is a panorama!
Spectacular striations
Extraordinary banding
Steep, steep, steep
The end point
Looking down
Returning
Hardly breaking sweat
The route
Looking back
This way to the car
Nearly there
Funchal once more a la Dali

As you can see from the photos, the eastern archipelago, now a nature reserve is extraordinarily beautiful. Lots of steep ups and downs but so, so worth it.

Bon voyage
