Day 7, Masca epic

Last day today and it was a cracker.

We drove to Los Gigantos, booked a boat ride back from the beach at Masca, jumped in a taxi and were driven to our starting point, the village at Masca.

After a beer and a sandwich we headed off. It’s less than 7km to the beach and it’s down hill all the way. You might think that means easy walking but boy oh boy you’d be so wrong πŸ˜₯.

The path started out ok.

But it quickly became steeper and steeper until we found ourselves scrambling down. We found a really nice Belgian lady and her husband in front of us. She was finding it very difficult so we helped her a little bit over some of the early tricky sections.

Here’s mampa making her way down one small part.

We soon found ourselves inside a huge gorge with enormous cliffs all around us. It was a lovely sunny day but bright sunshine couldn’t reach us so deep inside the earth.

Here’s mampa with some other walkers making their way down very slowly.

And here is what the path looked like. Can you see it? Not can I πŸ˜₯.

All you can see are rocks and huge cliffs all around you.

But the patterns on the rocks are amazing. You can see how the earth had moved and stretched as it came out of the sea.

Can you see the path? No? Neither could I. The path wasn’t clear at all. Can you see the walkers in this next photo?

Here’s mampa making her way back up again. Can you see the other walkers in the background?

This went on for a long, long time as we clambered over rocks, around rocks and in two cases under rocks by crawling 😯.

Here’s mampa trying not to fall over a waterfall.

Eventually we started to see the sunshine again as we passed through a small bamboo forest.

So we thought we were getting closer to the beach but …

Look at the size of that rock!

Here’s mampa scrambling over yet more rocks.

Isn’t she brave? πŸ’•

When we looked back you could see where we’d come from.

Can you see mampa in this photo?

The light started getting brighter and brighter as we made our way out of the gorge.

A quick clamber around a big rock ..

And we were getting closer and closer to the beach. But it was now 3:15 and our boat was leaving at 3:30 so I left mampa to make her way down on her own and I ran and ran stop the boat from leaving. I got to the beach in time πŸ˜€.

Can you see the little dog in this next picture? He’s 12 years old; he lives in the bar in Masca village and every day for all of his life he’s come down to the beach in the morning. He plays with the people running the boats on the beach. They feed and cuddle him and every evening after they’ve gone he runs back up to the village. It’s a very long hard walk over huge rocks with such a lot of clambering. For such a small dog to climb down and back up again every day is an incredible story.

The beach isn’t really a beach, just lots of pebbles, a tiny concrete jetty and lots of waves.

As you can see, the sea was quite rough but the trip back by boat was exhilarating.

The harbour in Los Gigantos was very calm when we arrived. We’d had a really lovely day and finished it off in a lovely tapas bar before driving back to our hotel over the mountains.

We’ll be home tomorrow. It’s been a really lovely holiday. Thanks for looking after the dogs and the chickens and the fish. We couldn’t have gone without your help.

Lots of love
